The Shang Tombs are made up of 500 tombs. These tombs were found in the Anyang city of China. It contains hundreds of bronze items. Nobles were buried in extravagant tombs with items of wealth that could be useful in the afterlife. Some artifacts include chariots, bronze containers and a ceremonial ax. Chariots were supposed to protect emperors in the afterlife. The Ceremonial Ax symbolized royal authority. The axes were used to sacrifice people who were buried with the emperor. Bronze containers were for eating and drinking. People also used bronze containers to perform rituals to honor ancestors. Some inscriptions on bronze vessels were to scare away evil spirits. Tombs varied in size and people were buried based on class. One tomb belongs to Wu-ting and his wife Fuha. This tomb consisted of 468 bronze objects and 775 pieces of jade. The people who built these tombs sometimes got buried alive with dead royalty.
